Artist’s statement:
Back in the late-sixties I took a NDD Foundation Course at Wolverhampton Art College and then studied furniture design at Leeds Art College.  Somewhat disillusioned at the career opportunities and a realisation that a Fine Art course would have been more appropriate I returned to my IT career until retiring in 2007.  In 2013, after a particularly bad winter had closed all golf courses, my long held passion at the time, I returned to my earlier interest in art and took up watercolour painting in 2013.
I started painting in a traditional style and the usual landscape and predominantly cityscapes subjects.  However, as time progressed I became aware of the many alternative approaches and techniques that were being used by contemporary watermedia painters and in 2020 began actively pursuing a change in my methods and subjects.  I am particularly interested in the ordinary, mundane images of everyday life, capturing them in a chiaroscuro influenced manner with an abundance of lifting-out and then re-applying glazes of different colours.  I hope the shapes, blocks of colour and mere indications of objects created in this manner endow the images with an interesting, and almost, mysterious quality.  Additionally, mixed media has caught my attention and I find it exciting and fun to take traditional subjects and manipulate watercolour, oil pastel and acrylic paint and ink with pallet knives, droppers and various scrapers.  Nevertheless, I will occasionally indulge myself with a traditional watercolour.
In 2016 I was elected as an Associate of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists.
